how many people on this site admit to having a gambling problem? i've been playing blackjack for over eighteen years, and, after two huge wins adding up to 40 grand, i finally broke even. i know i have a problem and i read strategy books and attend gambler's anonymous to remind myself that i can self-destruct if i don't enforce my stop-loss limit. for money management, i bring a 100 unit bankroll and walk away when i'm up 10 units. yesterday, after three hours of playing $10 hands, i had a meager $5 profit (i guess it was better than a kick in the butt). i think winning blackjack is 95% money management and 5% strategy/card counting. i'm sure everyone wins some of the time but rarely do people walk away when they are ahead. there's so much talk about hitting A7 vs 10 or ways to gain that 2% edge over the house, but ultimately i don't think blackjack can be beaten because we are greedy. in the eighteen years i've played blackjack, i've yet met anyone who can count successfully or win consistently (here in the canadian province of alberta, casinos can't ban card counters). other than the MIT team, i don't really know anyone making real money from playing blackjack. i personally don't think we need more card counting books... it just gives people who lack financial discipline a false sense of security and the promise of easy wealth. nevertheless, i love this game and i think this is a wonderful site.

in the early 1900's the evangelists were telling people that ice cream sodas were sinful-they had them made illegal to serve on Sunday-so the ice cream parlor owners produced what we now call a sundae to serve on Sunday and stay within the law.
Point: I'm beginning to beleive that these "moral" people simply can't stand it when anyone appears to be enjoying themseves! and god forbid they experience pleasure!
H.L. Mencken defined puritanism as "the haunting fear that someone somewhere may be happy"
Point:we don't have to see a PROBLEM every time we enjoys ourselves-life is short-ENJOY!!
best of luck-

Perfect, absolutely perfect.... "Prog"
"we pay a heavy price for our fear of failure. It produces a progressive
narrowing of the personality. There is no learning without some trial and
error. To keep on learning you must risk failure for the rest of your life."
Not an exact quote, but close enough..................

Gambling problem? What gambilng problem?
I'll take 3-2 odds from anyone that I don't have a gambling problem. I'll throw in my mortgage while I'm at it.
Everyone must establish their own limits. There are people that should not be in a casino, period. I have set my priorities, and blackjack is not one. It is a source of entertainment. I will not gamble on living expenses. I will also be prepared by understanding the game and the environment which helps maintain realistic expectations.

how would you bust on hitting a soft-18? Worst you could do is get a hard-18, and maybe something even lower. But "busting"? Unless you mean you hit the A-7, get a 4 (you now have hard 12) or hit _again_ and bust???

I look at it this way...
Certain people, family or friends, don't like me playing BJ in casinos. I say whatever to that. Everyone has something they enjoy that they like to do all the time that costs money and has little or no profit for return on.
