Trip Report - Isle of Capri 3/6/04

Wasn't planning on going today... was just asked and was like, why not? I went 2 nights ago and won $450 so lets do it!

Started with $1000 playing @ $25 table... back and forth for awhile but had a good streak before taking a dinner break, up ~$400. Continued and was up and down again before winning $200 more but refused to play where an asshole talkative dealer was trying to tip hustle me, just cuz I was the only one out of the 5 people that wasn't tipping. OH MY I HADN'T EVER SEEN SUCH PATHETIC PLAYERS SO WILLING TO GIVE THE HOUSE SO MUCH EXTRA CASH!!! $2.50 chip tip here, $5 red chip there, tipping on blackjack, tipping on winstreaks, those losers were even tipping when winning 1 hand out of 3 or 4... *huge §igh*

Anyway, up $600 I decide to find a different table and end up playing at a $10 table where I break-in for $200 and continue playing my usual $25 progression and in 30 minutes find myself more than TRIPLING my buy-in, ending up with >$700 more!!

All good, ended up winning almost $1200, doubling my entire bankroll so it's all good.

Streaks:

Lost 4 in a row: 0 times!! ... Strange, but I dont remember ever employing the 4-loss quit point the whole night!

Won 4 in a row: Several times.

Most wins in a row: ~8!!!

Again, several hands in a row after my max bet cap of 4 in a row, I capped some serious money after winning some nice doubles and splits at the max level.

Note: 2 nights ago when I last gambled, I was pretty much even the whole night having many win and losing streaks, but right before we were about to go having $50 out, I was dealt two 6's against a 4, split those, got a double down hand, got 19 one 1st split 6, on the 2nd 6 I got ANOTHER 6, then with three 6's out split that 6 again got a 4th 6 and got yet ANOTHER double down hand, getting burnt on that one with a low card.
With $300 out, dealer rolls over a 10 and draws 10 to bust, $300 in one hand, won a few more after to profit $450 total.

It's been a good week for me gambling.

Nice win, Bug. You didn't say how long you played, but I would guess that you Did have some four losses in a row and just missed then in the heat of battle. I just went over 5,000 hands and did in fact find One set of 100 hands, were I only lost three in a row. All of the others had at least one loss of four in a row, but you maybe you are a better player than I am. Hope your win streak keeps up.

Thanks guys, I'm glad I'm finally hitting those streaks the way it's SUPPOSED to happen!

Midnite, we arrived at around 7, played a little, ate at around 8:30 and played again at 9:30 til 12:30. So just a little over 4 hours?? Pretty good I guess :)


All of the others had at least one loss of four in a row, but you maybe you are a better player than I am. Hope your win streak keeps up.

Wow, how did you do your 5000 hand experiment? Manually? Also, you're probably right but I really dont remember losing 4 in a row, if I did it had to have been just once. Also, I play flawless BS, employ the Mag7 + frequently hand interact so the HA may be right around 0.00% meaning it's an even game, meaning now it's just a matter of STREAKS, and hitting the winstreaks right?

Ray, that's a nice nickname... :) but the only place I've ever gambled in this part of the country is the Isle... we were planning to visit Harrah's but since I was doing so well that plan was rejected.

Bug-The 5,000 hands were played manually and that is just a drop in the bucket. I have thousands of hands played manually. The most I every played and recorded in one month was 20,000 hands. Most all were played at work, during lunch and breaks. I work nights (start at midnight) and not interested in eating at 3:30 a.m., so I play BJ. You can rack up a lot of hands in thirty years.

I'm quite familiar with table etiquette, Bug, and there are no hard and fast rules on how much/how often to tip (and no, I don't tip when I lose, but I tip well when I win). How much of your $1,200 you won did you tip? I would hope it was at least $50-100 over the course of the night.

Dealers make a large chunk of their money in tips, just like waiters.

Bug- It seems from past posts that you hold dealers generally in low regard. Many, if not most work for near minimum wage and their share of pooled tips- and it isn't an easy job, often takes years of working swing and graveyard shifts to gain enough experience to land a gig at an upper end casino and earn a decent living. They are in a service business just like waitstaff, and depend on players to pay their bills.

I agree that I don't like being hustled or made to feel guilty about tipping but my question to you is why do you care at all- let alone seem to be angry-about how often or how much someone else is either giving or playing for the dealer? Have you ever parked cars, been a waiter, or done anything for a living where you depended on others to elect/or not to pay you. If you had, you might feel differently, whether or not the context was gambling. Dealers don't provide any less service to you because you are risking money rather than out for dinner or drinks, and they are more likely to get stiffed by losers, and expect it. When you win, not only is tipping an offering to the gods of blackjack, but its also the socially right choice to make.

It depends, because according to a post from here awhile back from I believe an author or very good source, the recommended thing to do was to not tip the waitress if you're not tipping the dealer, thus that is exactly what I employ. Now of course if I'm winning, I tip both the dealer and waitress.

Because it makes absolutely no sense to see people AT A CASINO TO MAKE MONEY, so freely giving it away to the ones that already have the edge over them!!!! If you don't depend on your job to pay the bills, your mommy and daddy are still paying your bills, aren't they? 99+% of the people in this world rely on their jobs to pay their bills. And when they provide you with good service (good conversation, good cards), they should be tipped well, especially if you win big - because most dealers don't expect you to tip them if they pound you into oblivion at their table. Sounds like you're just too cheap to part with a few dollars to reward the dealer for your big win, though.

To each his own. Just because one person (regardless of who it is, BTW) says $1 every 20 hands is the way to go doesn't make it the rule. That's just their philosophy on it.

Bughouse - Get real! for pete's sake. Mr. Ed is a relatively new bj player, playing nickel/dime 8 deck in Connecticut. He is probably a very good blackjack player, but those credentials don't make him any more of an "authority" on tipping than Larz or Buff.

If we're talking tipping philosophies, here's mine:

I tip little to nothing if I'm losing or even. If I'm winning, I'll either toss out a toke after a 3-4 hand win streak, or place an occasional bet for the dealer (usually with silver). When I cash out for the night, if I'm ahead, I toss the dealer a tip after they color me up. I see no reason to be super tight with your winnings unless you gamble for a living. I go to the casino for entertainment (what's better entertainment than getting paid to play a game and have a few drinks?). If I win, I usually tip out 5-10% of the winnings (in total, including the tokes along the way). There have been times when I lost that I didn't tip a dime all night.

But I ALWAYS tip the waitress $1 or so per drink, regardless of how things are going at the table.

BTW, you've said in two posts that these tips are going to the house. It's obvious that you understand they are not going to the house but to employees/working stiffs.

You mention for what I think is the first time that you're a dealer. How is it you don't seem to know where any casinos are located except the one you visit, or how to play for the dealer by placing their bet on top of yours? In fact if you're really a dealer I'd think you'd use this forum to try to convince us to tip more.

Just curious, where and when do you work? I think we could get a field trip together to come and visit.

I guess we wait till he posts to know where he deals, but it almost has to be Louisiana.....He keeps asking questions about LV casinos and didn't know where Tunica is; so that eliminates Nevada and Mississippi.

That's cool, Bughouse, knowing you are a dealer. What states are you certified to deal in (and aren't those background checks and blood tests a pain?)??

I'm still not taking sides on this discussion, but I have to admit I am a little puzzled that you "as a dealer" don't know more about toking. That is your "bread and butter".

PJ-Lets say you decided to tip the dealer one dollar. IF you place it in front of your bet and win, the dealer gets $2.00. At some casinos (the one I go to most, for one) the dealers may not let it ride. If you place your $1.00 on top of your bet and win, you give the dealer $1.00 and can rebet the same $1.00 as many times as you want to. You control all the chips inside the betting circle. AS many players bet $6.00 or $7.00 or even $37.50, you can tell the dealer "that is for you if we win", or you can "offset" the tip and most dealers will know, it is a bet for them. That way if you lose the hand the dealer will know that you tried to toke him. Is one way better than the other ? I don't think so. Tip the dealers anyway you want to. At the end of session, after you know how you come out or during play, in front of or on top of your bet. The dealers will still appreciate it.

Yes, chess boy, entertainment. That's why I play blackjack. Entertainment. I have a full time job that provides me with a roof over my family's head and everything we need. I don't need (or want) another job. That's why I don't count cards. Too much work and makes the game much less fun, IMO. I play BS and have a few drinks when I go to a casino. Over my life, I've made more money than I've lost playing BJ, so it's been pretty cheap entertainment.

As for tipping, I see no reason to be a cheap-assed bastard when I win. You apparently feel differently, even though you don't make your living playing blackjack, either. Although it sounds like your mommy and daddy are still paying your bills since you don't rely on your job to pay your bills, either. Where do you deal? If you put it out front, you're placing a bet for the dealer. If you win, he gets paid double the bet size (or 2.5 if you hit BJ). If you lose, he gets nothing. If you place it on top of your bet, he only gets the winnings. If you lose, he gets nothing.

I personally prefer to lay a bet out front for the dealer, but that's just a personal preference.

Dealer also griped about having to work so hard to pay bills while earning "min. wage" and how important tips were to her. I had never heard so much crying at a table. I felt she went to the extreme and it started to irritate me somewhat. After about half an hour she announced it was her last hand coming up so I placed $5 in front of my bet. Bang! Out came my Blackjack! She said, "See there. I know what to do!" (Maybe I should be a better tipper from now on.) She left with a smile.

Bug, what progression do you use?

?? I mentioned that already at the beginning of this thread, but just for you I'll mention it again. I use the WT progression usually at the $25 table. Although next time I go up there I'm thinking of using it at a $50 base bet. 50-75-100-125!

Now, to everyone that wanted to know where I deal: I deal for a casino gaming party company in Houston. Just like in Vegas or Louisiana, $13 an hour + tips (NOT minimum wage), I cant complain at all!

Someone mentioned a trip together... definitely lets do that! How about this summer? My personal preference is from June 17-20, as that's when I'll be in Vegas anyway for the National Open Chess Festival. What about the rest of you guys? Is this cool with you all? Anyway, I'd love to play with flawless BS players for once... lemme know what's up.
