Wasn't planning on going today... was just asked and was like, why not? I went 2 nights ago and won $450 so lets do it!
Started with $1000 playing @ $25 table... back and forth for awhile but had a good streak before taking a dinner break, up ~$400. Continued and was up and down again before winning $200 more but refused to play where an asshole talkative dealer was trying to tip hustle me, just cuz I was the only one out of the 5 people that wasn't tipping. OH MY I HADN'T EVER SEEN SUCH PATHETIC PLAYERS SO WILLING TO GIVE THE HOUSE SO MUCH EXTRA CASH!!! $2.50 chip tip here, $5 red chip there, tipping on blackjack, tipping on winstreaks, those losers were even tipping when winning 1 hand out of 3 or 4... *huge §igh*
Anyway, up $600 I decide to find a different table and end up playing at a $10 table where I break-in for $200 and continue playing my usual $25 progression and in 30 minutes find myself more than TRIPLING my buy-in, ending up with >$700 more!!
All good, ended up winning almost $1200, doubling my entire bankroll so it's all good.
Streaks:
Lost 4 in a row: 0 times!! ... Strange, but I dont remember ever employing the 4-loss quit point the whole night!
Won 4 in a row: Several times.
Most wins in a row: ~8!!!
Again, several hands in a row after my max bet cap of 4 in a row, I capped some serious money after winning some nice doubles and splits at the max level.
Note: 2 nights ago when I last gambled, I was pretty much even the whole night having many win and losing streaks, but right before we were about to go having $50 out, I was dealt two 6's against a 4, split those, got a double down hand, got 19 one 1st split 6, on the 2nd 6 I got ANOTHER 6, then with three 6's out split that 6 again got a 4th 6 and got yet ANOTHER double down hand, getting burnt on that one with a low card.
With $300 out, dealer rolls over a 10 and draws 10 to bust, $300 in one hand, won a few more after to profit $450 total.
It's been a good week for me gambling.

Nice win, Bug. You didn't say how long you played, but I would guess that you Did have some four losses in a row and just missed then in the heat of battle. I just went over 5,000 hands and did in fact find One set of 100 hands, were I only lost three in a row. All of the others had at least one loss of four in a row, but you maybe you are a better player than I am. Hope your win streak keeps up.
BUG: Maybe we should call you the Houston streak doctor. Have you ever
noticed that we all seem to do better at certain casinos? Like you, I've had
some good luck at the Isle of Capri at several different locations, even in
Denver where they have the limit bet. Well, your getting their money and
that's the main thing. Keep it up....

Thanks guys, I'm glad I'm finally hitting those streaks the way it's SUPPOSED to happen!
Midnite, we arrived at around 7, played a little, ate at around 8:30 and played again at 9:30 til 12:30. So just a little over 4 hours?? Pretty good I guess :)
All of the others had at least one loss of four in a row, but you maybe you are a better player than I am. Hope your win streak keeps up.
Wow, how did you do your 5000 hand experiment? Manually? Also, you're probably right but I really dont remember losing 4 in a row, if I did it had to have been just once. Also, I play flawless BS, employ the Mag7 + frequently hand interact so the HA may be right around 0.00% meaning it's an even game, meaning now it's just a matter of STREAKS, and hitting the winstreaks right?
Ray, that's a nice nickname... :) but the only place I've ever gambled in this part of the country is the Isle... we were planning to visit Harrah's but since I was doing so well that plan was rejected.

Bug-The 5,000 hands were played manually and that is just a drop in the bucket. I have thousands of hands played manually. The most I every played and recorded in one month was 20,000 hands. Most all were played at work, during lunch and breaks. I work nights (start at midnight) and not interested in eating at 3:30 a.m., so I play BJ. You can rack up a lot of hands in thirty years.

Well it's completely pathetic the frequency they were tipping. It's like they came there to donate their winnings, not to make money!
Of course I tip at restaurants or anywhere else... dont you? I'm not gambling and RISKING MY MONEY every hand. I go to a casino to MAKE MONEY, not give away portions of my winnings, and dont understand why those people did it so much. From them alone they easily gave the dealer ~$100 in tips alone, and that's just while I was there. And again, THEY WEREN'T EVEN WINNING!!! In case you're not familiar, Buffarino, you're only supposed to tip the dealer ONCE every 20 hands, and that's only IF you're winning! Also, if you dont tip the waitress, dont tip the dealer.

I'm quite familiar with table etiquette, Bug, and there are no hard and fast rules on how much/how often to tip (and no, I don't tip when I lose, but I tip well when I win). How much of your $1,200 you won did you tip? I would hope it was at least $50-100 over the course of the night.
Dealers make a large chunk of their money in tips, just like waiters.

I just caught that part of your post. You don't tip the waitress?

Bug- It seems from past posts that you hold dealers generally in low regard. Many, if not most work for near minimum wage and their share of pooled tips- and it isn't an easy job, often takes years of working swing and graveyard shifts to gain enough experience to land a gig at an upper end casino and earn a decent living. They are in a service business just like waitstaff, and depend on players to pay their bills.
I agree that I don't like being hustled or made to feel guilty about tipping but my question to you is why do you care at all- let alone seem to be angry-about how often or how much someone else is either giving or playing for the dealer? Have you ever parked cars, been a waiter, or done anything for a living where you depended on others to elect/or not to pay you. If you had, you might feel differently, whether or not the context was gambling. Dealers don't provide any less service to you because you are risking money rather than out for dinner or drinks, and they are more likely to get stiffed by losers, and expect it. When you win, not only is tipping an offering to the gods of blackjack, but its also the socially right choice to make.

Also, if you don't tip the waitress, don't tip the dealer.
I just caught that part of your post. You don't tip the waitress?
It depends, because according to a post from here awhile back from I believe an author or very good source, the recommended thing to do was to not tip the waitress if you're not tipping the dealer, thus that is exactly what I employ. Now of course if I'm winning, I tip both the dealer and waitress.
[quote]How much of your $1,200 you won did you tip? I would hope it was at least $50-100 over the course of the night.
Why do you care how much I tip? Furthermore, think about it. If the recommended thing to do is tip $1 every 20 HANDS if one is WINNING, do you think I was dealt ANYWHERE NEAR 1000 hands in order to warrant even $50 of tipping?
[quote]Many, if not most work for near minimum wage and their share of pooled tips- and it isn't an easy job
?! Where do you get your false information? Dealers, for what they do, get paid VERY GOOD - $13 an hour + tips they pool from everyone! I personally am a Blackjack dealer myself so I know exactly how it's done. Minimum wage?!?!?!? hahahah although dealing BJ is simple I wouldn't do it for minimum wage.
[quote]They are in a service business just like waitstaff, and depend on players to pay their bills.
Again, I dont depend on players at my table to pay my bills. If you do, I suggest finding a different job. It is completely their option whether or not they want to tip me.
[quote]my question to you is why do you care at all- let alone seem to be angry-about how often or how much someone else is either giving or playing for the dealer?
Because it makes absolutely no sense to see people AT A CASINO TO MAKE MONEY, so freely giving it away to the ones that already have the edge over them!!!! (and a MUCH greater advantage the casino has since they all dont play even close to flawless BS as they are debating aloud "whether i should double my A/2v5" or "if i should split my 9's against a 9") Let me ask you, Larz, since you seem to disagree with my views on tipping in general at a casino: When you go to a casino to play BJ, are you going there to MAKE MONEY?! Or give $$ so freely away everytime you get dealt a BJ or beat the dealer? I would certainly hope it's the former, and if it is, why would you give your won money BACK TO THE HOUSE, especially if the dealer is unfriendly and hustling you for tips in the first place?
[quote]When you win, not only is tipping an offering to the gods of blackjack, but its also the socially right choice to make.
Again, as I mentioned in the beginning, the proper thing to do is tip once every 20 hands and that's IF YOU'RE WINNING which is what I do already, but as those people were just going back and forth with the house, why in the HELL would they be so stupid to tip so frequently? Did they just go there to donate their winnings to the casino? Come on, get real.
If you dont believe that tipping ONE DOLLAR EVERY 20 HANDS is the right thing to do (versus haphazardly tipping $2.50 & $5 every hand), then go ahead and search for the past topic here, and confront the person who recommended that, than let me know if you're going to disagree with experts like them as well.

You won $1,200 dollars in about 4 hours of play, yet you didn't even come close to tipping $50 total (and you don't tip the waitress)? Wow. You're one cheap bastard. (EDIT: from your post below, you only tipped $4-5 on the night? What a joke. Why tip at all in that case?)
If you don't depend on your job to pay the bills, your mommy and daddy are still paying your bills, aren't they? 99+% of the people in this world rely on their jobs to pay their bills. And when they provide you with good service (good conversation, good cards), they should be tipped well, especially if you win big - because most dealers don't expect you to tip them if they pound you into oblivion at their table. Sounds like you're just too cheap to part with a few dollars to reward the dealer for your big win, though.
To each his own. Just because one person (regardless of who it is, BTW) says $1 every 20 hands is the way to go doesn't make it the rule. That's just their philosophy on it.

Larz, Buffarino, and anyone else that thinks you should tip the dealer frequently:
Take a pick, tip $1 once an HOUR or $1 every 20 HANDS?!?!?! Anything else and you're just losing your profits, and wasting your time at a place where you are present to WIN MONEY.

...
Maybe after reading that you guys and everyone else who exorbitantly tips the dealer will get a rude awakening and start tipping the dealers less frequently. That is my hope, at least.

Bughouse - Get real! for pete's sake. Mr. Ed is a relatively new bj player, playing nickel/dime 8 deck in Connecticut. He is probably a very good blackjack player, but those credentials don't make him any more of an "authority" on tipping than Larz or Buff.
I'm not taking sides yet, but let's keep the playing field level.

If we're talking tipping philosophies, here's mine:
I tip little to nothing if I'm losing or even. If I'm winning, I'll either toss out a toke after a 3-4 hand win streak, or place an occasional bet for the dealer (usually with silver). When I cash out for the night, if I'm ahead, I toss the dealer a tip after they color me up. I see no reason to be super tight with your winnings unless you gamble for a living. I go to the casino for entertainment (what's better entertainment than getting paid to play a game and have a few drinks?). If I win, I usually tip out 5-10% of the winnings (in total, including the tokes along the way). There have been times when I lost that I didn't tip a dime all night.
But I ALWAYS tip the waitress $1 or so per drink, regardless of how things are going at the table.

Bug- Since you asked, I don't care what you do with your money, my question then, and now, is why do you care so much what the others at the table do with theirs? BTW, you've said in two posts that these tips are going to the house. It's obvious that you understand they are not going to the house but to employees/working stiffs.
You mention for what I think is the first time that you're a dealer. How is it you don't seem to know where any casinos are located except the one you visit, or how to play for the dealer by placing their bet on top of yours? In fact if you're really a dealer I'd think you'd use this forum to try to convince us to tip more.
Just curious, where and when do you work? I think we could get a field trip together to come and visit.
Grifter

Larz - Great idea, count me in on the trip. Be fun for four or five of us to go wherever it is, and play at a table with Bughouse dealing.
I guess we wait till he posts to know where he deals, but it almost has to be Louisiana.....He keeps asking questions about LV casinos and didn't know where Tunica is; so that eliminates Nevada and Mississippi.
That's cool, Bughouse, knowing you are a dealer. What states are you certified to deal in (and aren't those background checks and blood tests a pain?)??
I'm still not taking sides on this discussion, but I have to admit I am a little puzzled that you "as a dealer" don't know more about toking. That is your "bread and butter".

Okay, granted, how do you explain jimmy's post, indicating that several blackjack BOOKS he's read says to tip once out of 20 hands, and that's IF you're winning?!
Furthermore, if you guys are such in disagreement with tipping etiquette, why only NOW are you talking? When that topic was still active, you people didn't say anything at all, why?

Since we are on the subject, what's the difference in placing the toke in FRONT of my bet and placing it on TOP? Is one method better than the other? I, for one, usually tip after coloring up at the end of my session. (If I am even or ahead.)

PJ-Lets say you decided to tip the dealer one dollar. IF you place it in front of your bet and win, the dealer gets $2.00. At some casinos (the one I go to most, for one) the dealers may not let it ride. If you place your $1.00 on top of your bet and win, you give the dealer $1.00 and can rebet the same $1.00 as many times as you want to. You control all the chips inside the betting circle. AS many players bet $6.00 or $7.00 or even $37.50, you can tell the dealer "that is for you if we win", or you can "offset" the tip and most dealers will know, it is a bet for them. That way if you lose the hand the dealer will know that you tried to toke him. Is one way better than the other ? I don't think so. Tip the dealers anyway you want to. At the end of session, after you know how you come out or during play, in front of or on top of your bet. The dealers will still appreciate it.

Yes, chess boy, entertainment. That's why I play blackjack. Entertainment. I have a full time job that provides me with a roof over my family's head and everything we need. I don't need (or want) another job. That's why I don't count cards. Too much work and makes the game much less fun, IMO. I play BS and have a few drinks when I go to a casino. Over my life, I've made more money than I've lost playing BJ, so it's been pretty cheap entertainment.
As for tipping, I see no reason to be a cheap-assed bastard when I win. You apparently feel differently, even though you don't make your living playing blackjack, either. Although it sounds like your mommy and daddy are still paying your bills since you don't rely on your job to pay your bills, either. Where do you deal? If you put it out front, you're placing a bet for the dealer. If you win, he gets paid double the bet size (or 2.5 if you hit BJ). If you lose, he gets nothing. If you place it on top of your bet, he only gets the winnings. If you lose, he gets nothing.
I personally prefer to lay a bet out front for the dealer, but that's just a personal preference.
Thanks, Buffarino, Midnite.
A related story: Once a dealer was moaning about how the cocktail servers make so much more than they. Dealer also griped about having to work so hard to pay bills while earning "min. wage" and how important tips were to her. I had never heard so much crying at a table. I felt she went to the extreme and it started to irritate me somewhat. After about half an hour she announced it was her last hand coming up so I placed $5 in front of my bet. Bang! Out came my Blackjack! She said, "See there. I know what to do!" (Maybe I should be a better tipper from now on.) She left with a smile.

Bughouse – I sure don’t want to talk about my poker game this morning, so let me get right to the point…….You have created a ton of interest with your announcement that you are a dealer.
The ball is in your court!!!! – We already have the following ready to make a trip to your casino and play while you deal: Midnite, Buffarino, Michigan Dave, Larz (I assume) and myself…….that is five, and I’m sure I can get at least a couple more.
Please tell us ASAP (this afternoon if possible) the name of the casino where you deal and a good time for us to come down when you will be dealing!!!.......most of the guys need at least a week and a half to plan, so if you let us know today, maybe we could make it next weekend.
Looking forward to hearing from you…..this sounds like a great time.

Well apparently you are just another stupid gambler who ONLY goes there for entertainment and consequently sucks up to the dealer and throws her red chips. I pity your utter stupidity. If I was a cheap-assed bastard, I WOULDN'T TIP AT ALL, now would I? So STFU and continue doing what you do best: UNNECESSARILY TIPPING THE DEALER YOUR BANKROLL!      You're really stupid: you go there solely for ENTERTAINMENT..............hmm, why cuz you CANT GET ANY ENTERTAINMENT AT YOUR HOUSE?!??!?!?!? hahahahahaha.

Bug, what progression do you use?
?? I mentioned that already at the beginning of this thread, but just for you I'll mention it again. I use the WT progression usually at the $25 table. Although next time I go up there I'm thinking of using it at a $50 base bet. 50-75-100-125!
Now, to everyone that wanted to know where I deal: I deal for a casino gaming party company in Houston. Just like in Vegas or Louisiana, $13 an hour + tips (NOT minimum wage), I cant complain at all!
Someone mentioned a trip together... definitely lets do that! How about this summer? My personal preference is from June 17-20, as that's when I'll be in Vegas anyway for the National Open Chess Festival. What about the rest of you guys? Is this cool with you all? Anyway, I'd love to play with flawless BS players for once... lemme know what's up.

Buffarino I get tipped more than you'd believe since I'm VERY FAST and personable with my people unlike you. That's probably why you dont get jack!!! hahahah.
So what if I dont deal at a REAL casino I'm STILL a BJ dealer and could easily do the real thing if I wasn't so busy pursuing my Pharmacy degree, teaching my Trumpet students, and coaching chess & bughouse. You just cant handle the fact that I'm multi-talented like that.

Trumpet? Chess? Bughouse? Where to start...
Nevermind. It's just too easy. But the fact remains that you have no idea what it's like to deal for a living (or work in some other service job) where you have to depend on tips to feed your kids and pay your mortgage. Then again, you probably never will. You have to have sex to have kids.

Bug- "Pope" Midnite says: Bless you my son for you have sinned. Now say ten Mail Harrys and go to bed.
Colin- They used to call a place where you put crazy people a "Bughouse" or "Nuthouse". Not sure how you would get to be a Master of it though ?

Maybe it's like in the movie Sixteen Candles and he's the King of the Dipsh!ts.

Lets see: If Bug is is a BJ dealer, and Midnite is the Pope, and I got a poker table in my basement, then I must be Amarillo Slim....or Maybe Bug is Al Hirt..or Bobby Fischer...or Jonas Salk... :P

I wanna be Chris Moneymaker! The unknown accountant who shocks the world and beats the best players in the world to claim the World Series!
Just goes to show how smart and talented accountants are... 8)

Bug/Buff I am going to leave your rhetoric alone, for a couple of days and then bust the posts. Use the PM for the name calling, etc. not the site.

Glad to see not much has changed in my absence. If Bug dealt at a real casino, you could have counted me in for that trip too, guys. I get to Houston frequently on business. [Question: does Texas have any casinos at all?]
To Colin from Glasgow: if you ever needed confirmation that we Americans are crazy, you certainly found it here. Welcome to the board.

Out of those four places, the only one anywhere close to "normal" is Maine. Las Vegas, New York, and New Jersey are enough for a preliminary diagnosis of national insanity. Visit San Francisco, Los Angeles, and New Orleans, and the diagnosis will become a clinical certainty. Welcome to our world. You may actually be at risk of moving here someday.

A "Joisey Goil" moving to Scotland? As long as you're prepared to pay for a translator when you're not around to translate for her.
Here's an old local joke that you've probably heard from your girlfriend: "Why does New York have more lawyers and New Jersey more toxic waste dumps?" Answer: "New Jersey got first pick." (PS I'm a lawyer so I can say stuff like this.)

Under David Blunketts ( British Home Secretary ) recent proposals for Refugees & Foreign Nationals gaining British Nationality, this joke has been selected as one of the criteria tests. If you don't laugh at it then you will never considered to be 'British'. In a train carriage there was an Englishman, a Frenchman, a spectacular looking blonde and a frightfully awful looking fat lady. After several minutes of the trip the train happens to pass through a dark tunnel, and the unmistakable sound of a slap is heard. When they leave the tunnel, the Frenchman had a big red slap mark on his cheek :o . The blonde thought - "That French son of a bitch wanted to touch me and by mistake, he must have put his hand on the fat lady  , who in turn must have slapped his face" :? The fat lady thought - "This dirty old Frenchman laid his hands on the blonde and she smacked him". The Frenchman thought - "That f---ing Englishman put his hand on that blonde and by mistake she slapped me". :P The Englishman thought - "I hope there's another tunnel soon so I can smack that Frenchman again." :D
PS: No racism is ment or intended in telling of this joke, so please do not take offence to it, apologizes if you do

Don't worry, mon ami. Not many Americans will be offended by a joke about the French. However, any remarks about "frightfully awful looking fat" people might get you sued.
