If you have a good hand you should insure... Myth
The count only tells you how much to bet... myth
The truth is you should play differently with a count of plus one than you should than with a count of zero.
A 2 card up for the dealer is the dealers ace. True that it is a better card for the house than say a 5 or 6 but it is not even close to being as good as an ace. With a 2 I will make a hand 65% of the time with an ace showing I will make a hand 88%. A 2 is much better for the player than an ace there is no comparison.
Spliting 8's against a 10 is wrong. False you should always or almost always split your 8's.
You can predict what cards are under my whole card with card machines that check for blackjack I don't even know whats under my whole card.
Hitting 16 vs a 10 is a better play than hitting 16 vs a 7! myth
The truth you are 4 times better hitting 16 vs a 7 than 16 vs a 10!
If you cut the cards thin you will win! myth Truth it doesn't matter how the cards are cut.
A bad player on third base will fuck up your chances to win. Myth
the truth is that other blackjack players have no effect on your results long term.

True: The count can used to alter basic strategy plays, but the vast majority of the benefit from counting comes from increasing your bet when the count is favorable.

The MIT team didn't use playing indices, yet they had no problems beating the Vegas casinos by counting and betting only... In shoes, playing efficiency (departure from basic strategy plays) is not very important, whereas in SD, with a good counting system and good indices, you can beat the game flat-betting...

But most are playing shoes.

I think the biggest myth is listening to the dealers advice because they know the game. I have yet to meet a dealer that knows perfect basic strategy, or doesn't believe in some type of voodo logic like the flow of cards. They learn the game by the jokers that they deal to everyday. And as most of you know 99% of the people that play blackjack are just ploppies. So in reality the dealer is no more than a ploppie standing on the other side of the table.

Oh nooo.... said the moron, you just wait for the shuffle mister. Well, you may want to kill the guy and don't expect any help from the dealer. So, you curb your feelings and walk away. Another hour wasted.

The "no mid-shoe entry" sign contributes to the idea that the flow is real. They see it at the green and above as a special consideration for the big players.

If the flow was real, we should take up a collection to play the spot vacated by a player. Try telling that to some folks. You want accomplish anything, but maybe you feel a tad better.

When I split tens at a count of +5, it will only be to change the sacred flow.
When I spread to two hands at the proper time, it will only be to change the sacred flow.
When I hit my 12 vs dealer 4,5,6, you know it is only to change the sacred flow.
And if even if things were going good for the table, I will know that the sacred flow was about to change exactly in the same way that the ploppy on the other end of the table knew that someone took the dealers bust card. Because belief in the sacred flow will make me physic (or is it physco???)

Actually, in a situations where you do not want to run off players or situations where you wish to deflect heat, expressing a belief in the sacred flow will convince some that you are just another believer (ploppy) at the table.

How many times have you heard this?

"If you want to hit sixteens that's fine. If you want to stand on them, that's fine. But choose one and stay with it. You have to be consistent."

If a player is losing he is usually relieved to see a new dealer come in. If a player is winning he hates to see the old dealer leave. I would say that most players that play are supersitious and abosutley believe it. The truth of the matter is the dealer has no effect on winning or losing only the decisions that the player make have an effect on winning or losing.

i hate 17 has it exactly right. use "the sacred flow of the cards" and other ridiculous beliefs against the house and to your advantage. makes total sense. it is also true as andee says that dealers more often than not know how to deal, not how to play.

I think the cards might have a bit to do with it as well.Otherwise we wouldn't be so concerned with variance.

At a casino I play at, when they changed dealers, the new dealer would always burn a card. Which of course, the players believed would change the cards.

This casino recently changed their policy. They no longer burn a card when they change dealers. When the first changed the policy, the dealers made a big deal of letting the players know of the new policy. The regular players are so happy that they no longer burn a card when they change dealers. What a great policy for the players!

Give me a break!

At some of the casinos in Biloxi, on pitch games only, when a new dealer comes in the cards get shuffled. Most of the casinos just pass the deck and burn one card. My last trip I noticed that one or two of the casinos would change the dealer and shuffle.

On shoe games, the dealer places the shoe in the center of the table, clears and shows his hands and the new dealer steps up, clears and shows his hands and burns the next card. Then puts the shoe back in place and resumes play.

changing dealers will change your luck. Myth their is no proof of this at all. I constinatly see players are relieved if they are losing when there is dealer change or they feel cheated if they are winning and there is a dealer change!!!

If some is a really bad player at the table it will change the luck of the other players at the table. This simple isn't true it will only change the luck of the person who plays badly!!!

I disagree!!!!!! Changes dealers definitely changes luck at the table!! However, changing dealers!! does not change the luck! of someone who plays badly!!! Also!!!!!!!, try to find a casino where there is a band playing!!??! and only play blackjack??!!@@#!! during fast-paced songs. That is a definite secret to winning!!!!!!

One myth about blackjack is that card counting is illegal. While the casino can toss anybody out for any reason including card counting. Card counting is a way you can win at blackjack while not cheating.

blackjack is unique in that the chances for the players to beat the dealer improve under the circumstances wherein the remaining pack to be dealt are richer in aces & faces relative to the low ranked cards (ie 2's, 3's, 4's, 5's & 6's). card counting can provide quantitative information with regard to said richness so that card counters can obtain a quantitative value for the advantage or disadvantage they hold at any given time as a game is being dealt. with such knowledge card counters can bet in proportion to the advantage. making only significant bets when one haves the advantage affords the player an edge so that over time the player can come out ahead.

That is simply not the case unless the dealer happens to be showing a 7 over all 18 is a losing hand and should be tinkered with a lot. Soft 18 is the most profitable soft double down hand there is but most people fail to double on it. Next splitting 2 9's vs a low card is also a very good play that most people miss. Or spliting two 9's vs an 8 or 9 is another they miss as well. Also when you have soft 18 vs a 9 or 10 you should hit gaining 9 and 4 percent respectively.
