How is it that the dealer is able to make so many 6 card 20 and 21's.

What is it about the game that turns odds in favor of the house ? I always thought the dealer as just another player until last night.

The house "edge" comes from the "you play first, you break, you lose, even if the dealer breaks later." If a you-break/dealer-break became a push, it would become an even game except for counters.

With pen and paper list all the card combinations that add-up to
21. That should answer your first question.

Going first is a big hit and that is the main reason that playing every
hand correctly is so important. Proper hit/stand of your hand reduces
the house advantage by about 3.25%.....................

If you and I were required, as the dealer, to hit on all 14's, 15's, and 16's, we would draw to 21 more times also. It just seems like the dealer does it more often than not. It still doesn't make me feel very good when I'm holding a 20, then the dealer pulls off a miracle hand. OUCH!

One of the many reasons why a dealer makes a standing hand is that Basic Strategy permits it. When using Basic, the player does not draw when there is an excess of small cards. For example, 13 vs. Dealer 2 or 12 vs. Dealer 4. Both are rather close decisions that can "go the other way" when there's an excess of small cards remaining. Since the Basic player doesn't keep track of this excess, the player simply stands always, as prescribed by the strategy. Yet the Dealer surmises a good chance to win, as Dealer MUST draw.

A point to remember that in both examples the Player has a loser, even with the excess of small cards.... its just that the player loses LESS when the small cards are in excess.

Hope this helps.
