Soft hits
  • Here is a Basic Strategy question.....
I'm confused when I try to make logical sense of these soft hit strategies.
The Basic Strategy doesn't seem to be consistent, for example.....
When player has soft 17 against dealer 7, the player hits.
BUT, when player has soft 18 against dealer 8, the player stands.
AND, when player has soft 19 against dealer 9, the player stands.
SO, how come you hit on the soft 17? Why don't you stand like the other two? I'm confused!!!!
  • Just remember you NEVER stand with a soft 17, not against anything. A 17 is just not a good enough hand, and since it's soft and you can't break, you may as well try to improve it.

Although a 17 is the point at which you stop hitting when the hand is hard, it's not until 19 that you stop hitting when it's soft.
  • That makes good sense, Thanks....
  • Leon, I will make a correction to your statement. You DO hit on a soft 18 (A7)
or sometimes even double down. So, waiting till the soft 17 turns into a 19 is not always correct.
  • That's really what I meant. A soft 19 is the lowest soft hand that never takes a hit according to BS, as is a hard 17.
  • Last week my dealer was just killing us hand after hand. A hard 17 appeared. I had become so frustrated, I motioned for a hit and drew a 3! My 20 was still not good enough. Dealer also drew to 20.

Later I was staring at a hard 16 against the dealer's 2. (I was down about $200 after watching the dealer pull miracle hands.) I hit the 16 and caught a 5 for 21. You guessed it. The dealer also drew out to 21!

I think I should find another means of entertainment for a while.

Tough not to get discouraged Tribute when lady luck is kicking you in the crotch. But remember if you are playing correctly and with an edge the cards will come in time.Focus on getting good games till this streek passes.
  • Thanks everbody for the additional discussion on soft hits. they are all noted and appreciated!
Tribute, just sounds like the dealer was too hot.... Just time to get up, take a break, and find a new table with an easier dealer.
I was on the MS Gulf coast recently (AK: After Katrina) at one of the three open casinos. I had the fastest dealer I have ever seen. I could barely add fast enough, much less try to count (I'm still learning). I was alone on the table and now I know why. She was soooo fast she could deal both our hands and collect my bet before I finished adding my own hand! After only four hands I caught her taking one of my bets on a winning hand. She had already picked up the cards and money, but I stopped her from starting the next hand. She pulled out the top cards from the discard pile and sure enough, I was a winner. She had to call a pit boss over and made good on the bet.
Moral of the story...TIME TO GET UP AND FIND A NEW TABLE!!!
I'm going back in two days to try my luck again.
  • there is always many player or even the dealer think you are crazy to hit soft 18, once i hit soft 18 but the dealer put the card on himself

and the card is 3, i m really mad that i have do the hit on the table , and he say he see my action is dont hit

Hahahah, yeah I been there many times. You just gotta stick with it and be patient and stick with your tong term goal and not worry about that one horrible session.

Why the heck did you hit a hard 17? Just curious.

What was the count? If it was not favorable you could have sat out. If you were playing and counting when the numbers weren't favorable then that's your fault. I've done that too. It's hard to stay disciplined sometimes.
  • I hit the 17 out of pure frustration. I was getting beat up bad. I moved to different tables, played extra spots, different dealers. Nothing was working. My splits and double downs were not there. The dealers were either beating me by one, or they drew out to 20. The only advantage play I use right now is Ace/10 and board composition. I don't know what the counts were, but I was getting killed even playing minimum bets. It's been two or three years since this happened.
  • Well, in my last post I said I was going back to Biloxi for a few days. This trip was real good. After two days of Black Jack, on $5.00 and $10.00 minimum tables, I came home $500.00 up. I Started with an $800.00 bankroll and finished with $1,300.00. The message board at this web site was very instrumental! I have read all the archive histories and all the current ones. The archives are indeed a vast amount of information...almost too much to absorb, sometimes I think I'm going to explode from reading so much. Any way, thanks to all who helped create those archives. Additional note....I thought I did good, my wife only went with $100.00, and returned with $900.00. Next time I have a spare $100.00 I know who to give it to! She also played $5.00 and $10.00 Black Jack tables and tried the $25.00 table for a little while, in addition to the $10.00 craps table.
    Gulf Coast Update........
Biloxi only has three casinos open for now, Isle of Capri, The Palace and IP, so it is hard to find $5.00 tables. You can get them only on weekdays and early in the day. At dusk, the crowd increases and the limits increase with them! Comps are scarce except for meals. Hard to get free rooms yet because the damage from Katrina. The Casinos have limited rooms and they are full to capacity. No need for them to give the rooms for free. Was told by the management of two casinos that Harrahs has purchased several locations in Biloxi and plans to open two or three more land based casinos in the near future. Also was told that Golden Nugget, or one of the other major Vegas casinos, has already bought a couple of million dollars worth of property and also intends to open a land based casino. In all, after the repairs, there will be more casinos than before Katrina.
If any of you have the opportunity... go..... play..... help pump money into the local economy and help get those casinos open!!! Good Luck!
