new guy with questions

  • The post's title says it all. I decided to get into Blackjack almost 2 months ago. Haven't gone into a casino yet because when I do I'd like to have a chance of coming out ahead or at least without empty pockets. So far I'm getting a handle on basic strategy & soon will adopt a counting system. Now here come the dumb questions:

    - What count is best for a new guy to start with?
    - Is it possible to get an accurate sense of what's in the deck/shoe with a count where you don't have to divide by # of decks left, et. al?
    - Why is it more & more places are adopting unfavorable rules? I'm sure I can beat these games, but when payoff is 6 to 5 (or even money) on Blackjacks then is it worth it?
    - How in hell can you beat a game where they're using a shuffling machine? Random cards make counting impossible.

All constructive answers will be appreciated. Gracias.

  • Mad Pencil - First of all, welcome to the group.....My thoughts on your questions:

    - "What count is best for a new guy to start with?" I would suggest before you worry about a count that you get basic strategy "down cold", and I mean "down cold, perfect". Since you are just starting with blackjack, I would highly recommend Fred Renzey's latest book, "Blackjack Bluebook II". This is an excellent book for beginners, and also for experienced players. There are several counts in it, from simple to advanced......., and Fred is a member of this group and is always willing to answer questions.

"- Is it possible to get an accurate sense of what's in the deck/shoe with a count where you don't have to divide by # of decks left, et. all?".....Absolutely yes. There are three such counts in Blackjack Bluebook II, and there are KO Systems and the Red Seven to name a few.

"- Why is it more & more places are adopting unfavorable rules? I'm sure I can beat these games, but when payoff is 6 to 5 (or even money) on Blackjacks then is it worth it?" ....The rules are more unfavorable so the casinos can make more money. That is my 'read' on it. Regarding 6 to 5 blackjack payoff: Do NOT play in a game with this rule !!!

"- How in hell can you beat a game where they're using a shuffling machine? Random cards make counting impossible."...You can't, so do NOT play at tables that use them.

You can feel free to play at them if you DO NOT implement card counting as it wouldn't matter, but yes, dont even start worrying about counting until you know BS COMPLETELY and FLAWLESSLY with the amount of decks you are planning to work with. You got the Single, Double and Multi-deck BS to work with, do not confuse them otherwise you will get screwed.
