silly questions from BJ newbie
  • Hi Everyone

I posted about a month ago and asked what push and other words meant and you all were kind enough to respond but now that I have played the game (here still scared to go to AC) and read some more posts I have more qestions.

    what are units?

    what is a cover?

    what is "play coupon"

    what is "match play"

    and what is spreading?

also, I have only gambled in AC once and only slots yet I received a coupon for 1 night free at a great hotel that I have to use Sun-thur, $60.00 on my card when I swipe it in the kiosh and and show tixs. R those deals valid? I hesitate because I know I only played the slots and came out pretty even. (100.00) thanks! in advance
  • please. I want to graduate from the slots to 5 or 10 dollar BJ but I need to know all the definitions

a unit is your minimum bet. Typically the table minimum for a beginner. $5 or $10 would be common. Then when you see someone mention "bet 4 units at TC=2, that means bet 4 times your minimum bet...

A cover play is something you might do to throw off the pit critters when they are watching your play a bit more intently than usual. Making a bad basic strategy play, betting more than usual when the count is negative, etc. Anything to convince them you are a ploppy and not a threat.

A match play coupon is a common casino enticement to get you into the place in the first place. A $10 match play coupon lets you bet that coupon just like a $10 chip. If you win the hand, they pay you $10 as if you had bet a $10 chip. Often this requires you to add your own money to it, but it gives a tremendous edge for that round for you...

Spreading means varying your bet between one unit and N units, where N is your spread. Most shoe game players that count cards try to spread 1-12, meaning 1 unit bet until the count climbs to where you have an advantage, then you quickly ramp up your bet to 12 units (or more) as your advantage increases. That's how a card counter beats the house. You win no more hands when counting than when not counting, but you know which hands you have a higher probability of winning, and you bet more money on those hands, to gain an edge over the house.
  • but thank you even though I didnt get it all!

what are units? A UNIT IS YOUR BASE BET.IF YOU WERE SPREADING YOUR BETS BETWEEN $10 AND $30,YOU'D BE BETTING 1-3 UNITS

what is a cover? iTS WHEN YOU INTENIONALLY DO SOMETHING WRONG,IN THE HOPE OF CONVINCING THE CASINO THAT YOU ARE NOT AN ADVANTAGE PLAYER.NO NEED TO WORRY ABOUT THIS YET

    what is "play coupon"

what is "match play" YOU BET TEN DOLLARS AND PRESDENT THE COUPON. IF YOU WIN THEY PAY YOU AND EXTRA TEN DOLLARS.

and what is spreading?THE AMOUNT YOU VARY YOUR BET. IF YOU BET THE SAME EACH TIME,ITS CALLED FLAT-BETTING. IF YOU VARY YOUR BET ,ITS CALLED SPREADING.

I am guessing that spread and cover are two things you did not get and it is very understandable because it refers to expert play or cardcounting.
Since you are brand new to the game, forget spread and cover for now, they do not apply to someone who is in the start of the learning stage and if you get to that point there are several good books on cardcounting.

In the meantime, the first thing you should do is learn basic strategy. This sight will help you, you can purchase basic strategy cards or download them from the internet. Once it becomes second nature to you, you might then think about advancing your knowledge but in the meantime stick with the low bets.

  • Gentleman, with all due respect, I don't think a few definitions is the best advice that we could give to "darkchild". For example:

    - Google for blackjack terms or glossary ought to answer most of the simple stuff.

    - The blackjack school at BJ21.com and books by Wong, Renzey and others ought to be pre-recs to casino entry and not just blackjack.

Does he have to learn the hard way? I don't think so.............
  • darkchild,
We were all "newbies" one time. Just go play and have fun. Don't sweat the terms and definitions. If you have a real interest in the game, you will find yourself reading and playing more, which will lead to more understanding. Go play! Memorize Basic Strategy!
  • Thanks too you all! Heading to A.C. for July 4th. Hope I hae learned enough! Gotta find those 5.00 tables
