New To Blackjack
  • Hey everyone,

I am pretty new to the game of blackjack. I've known the rules for quite a while, but I just started playing about a month ago. I came across this site, and have been playing the game quite a bit. It seems whenever I follow the directions, I still lose all of my money lol. Well, I'm only thirteen years old, so I don't gamble in casions or anything. Only time I play blackjack is with my friends, and we'll bet a quarter or two. But hey, a bet is a bet. I need a good place to start learning. I'm hoping to learn some good strategies so I can win a few dollars next time I play :D

    Any tips are appreciated.

    Thanks

    Don't run with scissors.
  • Sure Mike, he's only 13, but it sounds like he is really interested in the game.

First of all CougarElite, when you play with your friends, does somebody in your group play as the dealer? I mean, do you all just try and get '21' or is there one person who controls the game?

You've never played in a casino, so do you know how the 'dealer' position is supposed to work?
  • Well some of my friends don't know how the dealer position works. When I play with them, we just all try to get to 21, whoever is closest wins. When I play with my other friends though, we play just like on the HitOrStand game, with a dealer and stuff. I joined a free online casino yesterday, and I managed to win $1000 playing blackjack :). Too bad it wasn't for real money. I'm still trying to learn about double downs and splits. I never knew about them until a few days ago.
  • Beware of the on-line free casino games. I have a strong feeling that they rig the free components so that you win more often. This is so that you think you will play well with real money. Blackjack is a fun game, but if you play for real money you have to be prepared to lose ALL of it.

LOL yeah. I would never play online for real money.
  • Yeah and there's examples of places like Barona Casino, here in San Diego--where they have little java games to play on their website. It plays like the hard hitorstand game rich with 10s and aces...And it's great because at the bottom of the page there's a tiny disclaimer warning that the java game does not represent their actual casino odds.

  • Thanks for the book recommendation. I was just looking at the book on Amazon and it got really good reviews. I'm still a little confused about how knowing the rules of blackjack and some strategies can make you win more often... but I guess it might work. I'm going to try to find this book locally.
  • Blackjack is not just a "guessing game". It does require a certain amount of skill to improve your odds of winning. All casino games have a built-in edge over the player. With BJ, some rules favor the player more, while others lean more toward the house. By learning and using the right strategy for making playing decisions, you will increase your opportunity and shrink the built in house advantage. Without knowledge, you're already defeated.
  • I see...

So in a real casino, does it matter how high your bet is when you play blackjack? If there were two players, Player 1 and Player 2 (and the dealer) and Player 1 bet $5, could Player 2 bet $3 and still play? Or do you have to match all of the other players at the table?
  • Consider that you are only playing against the dealer. Forget about the other players. Bet any amount you desire as long as you don't go over the posted maximum. Get Renzey's book. Practice on this site. Go get some real live action. Take only money you can afford to lose.
  • Sounds good :) I guess you recommend Renzey's book too. I hope it's good for beginners. I'm going to try to find it at the public library and look at it for a while. Not just stare at it, but read it. Well, thank you for all the help everyone!

  • Cougar, I forgot you are only 13. You have a lot of time to practice before going to Vegas. Happy Thanksgiving!
  • Happy Thanksgiving :D Yeah I have a ton of time to practice. Sometimes I just sit down with a deck of cards and play the role of the player and the dealer and use these cheap plastic poker chips. I know it sounds lame, but it's all I can do. Last time I did it, I made a profit of $5 8) lol. You guys really think reading Blackjack Bluebook will increase the amount of times I win?

That's very impressive that someone your age remembers what a public library is. :)
  • I'm 56 years old, it is more impressive when someone my age remembers where the public library is. Or even what it is good for. :)
