Bathroom Break - Leave chips on table?
  • I'm very new to Blackjack, but have never seen this addressed in any forum.
What do you do with your chips when you have to go pee (assuming none of the players at the table are your friends). Please let me know if there is a standardly accepted or proper-etiquette way for this.

I was playing at a table for a couple of hours, most of the other players had been there for at least an hour. I had to go to the bathroom, so I picked up my chips to leave. The dealer asked me to color up. I asked, "Do I have to, because I'm coming right back?" He (the dealer) and a couple other players said, just leave your chips there and come right back. Nobody's gonna mess with them.

Well, I had about $150 in chips and even though I didn't like the idea of just leaving my chips there, I did. (You can bet your @ss that I made a quick pee and came back quick). My chips were still there and all was ok.

However, is this how it's normally done? It would've been different if I had a friend at the table playing. This was on a cruise, and a couple of the players I had played with before. I just felt uncomfortable walking away with my chips (money) on the table. What's to stop anyone from just picking them up and walking off? I wouldn't walk away from any other table and just leave $150 and expect it to be there when I return.

I want to go to Vegas and realize that ya do gotta go pee sometime.
So, what do you do with your chips when you go?
Take 'em with you and hope your seat is still open when you return, or
leave 'em and hope the chips are still there when you return.

Thanks for helping a newbie with a simple situation.
  • Ask the dealer to save your spot for you. All casinos do this and they'll watch it for you if you leave your chips there. But there is a time limit. like 20 minutes is the most you can be gone.
  • Mighty Joe - thanks for the tip. I didn't know you could do this. I guess that is a standard practice and the dealer will watch them for you.

Michael990 - hold it in is NOT an option. You can only do that for so long. I don't get to gamble often (no casinos around) so when I do, I sit at the table for hours (like 4-5 hours straight) without getting up. Eventually, ya gotta go.
  • The dealers do usually watch them. A player at a table I was at had to leave quickly to help a drunk friend and when another player kept reaching over the chips left (quite a pile of blacks), the dealer got a clear box and placed over them.
  • You said you had $150 in chips. Just color in and they give you 1 black chip and 2 green. Ask them to hold the spot. Take your wizz and come back. However, if the count is way favorable I suggest you hold it in.

I don't think the dealer nor the casino is liable if someone happens to steal your chips?
  • With all the cameras looking every where, I would not ever get my hands close to anybody else's chips. To give you an idea how close they monitor everything, I was playing at the Flamingo Hilton in Las Vegas a few years ago. I colored up and left the table without realizing I left a $5 chip at the rail. The next day a player saw me and said the pit was holding the chip for me to go pick up. I went, and sure enough, they handed me the chip.
  • Z-Man - Not to worry. Just tell the dealer, then go drain the dragon and come back within a reasonable time. Your chips will be there.
  • Do that all the time. I would not leave any high-valued chips however. But red/green I leave all the time. The pit/dealer will watch them, and it will hold your place if things are crowded...

Yes, I realize I could color up easily. The bathroom was only a minute away and I'd be right back. I just didn't want to delay the game to color up only to come back 3-5 minutes later and have to change in my chips to resume playing.

THANKS TO ALL for the advice.
Popular opinion seems to be just leave your chips and let the dealer know you are coming right back. I agree with you that the dealer/casino would not be liable if someone did take your chips though.

The other big benefit of leaving your chips is that it saves your seat if you're only gonna be gone for a short time.
  • If I leave the table during a hand, I'll leave my chips, but take the cards that were dealt to me, just to keep things fair.
But, seriously, when people get up to "go" and leave their chips on the table, I always just take them. If they say something, I just find another table to play at, where the players are more friendly.
