basic count strategy chart
how do casinos feel about using the chart right at the table as you play? is this looked down upon?
-
I don't think they have any problem with it. They probably assume that if you need to look up a play, then you're certainly not a professional counter, and they'll still take your money.

It's sometimes the other players at the table who don't like to see the strategy cards in use because it slows everything down a little.

I am most likely one of those players that slows it down. The few times I have been to a casino, I don't *think* I made anyone too terribly mad (most likely because my friends and I occupied 5 seats at the table
). I had a little chart with me for refrence and they did not say a thing. If I was unsure about a move, I would look up at the dealer and he or she would say, "You should hit or split or whatever." Trust me I did not have to do this with every hand, but I did a few times. A few times the dealer would kind of question my move, even though I was playing by the chart and making the "correct" move, they would say "are you sure?" Everytime they did that I would change my move and they were right most every time. I assume they were able to keep track of the cards that were out and knew they were going to bust.
BUT, I most likely would not play with a group of people I did not know (meaning by myself) because I do not want to make anyone angry with my slowness
. Although, I have that chart down now! I won't be needing it on my next trip!

There are two plays I make that the dealers always give me "that look" on.
It is when I hit or double A7. They say, "You've got 18. That's a good hand."
That's why you really need to know all your basic plays. To keep the dealer from trying to mess you up, and, not have to rely on the strategy card too often. Actually it is OK to slow down because the more hands played per hour means more losses per hour!
You will also notice over time that a lot of dealers don't know BS that well.

In my experience, most dealers have no clue when it comes to basic strategy. I'm constantly getting advice when I hit a soft 18 against a 9 or 10, or when I split 9s against an 8 or 9, or many other correct plays. Recently, I advised a woman playing next to me (after she asked) how to play her hand. The dealer, an older woman, told her I was wrong. When I defended my advice, she asked me how old I am. I told her 34 and she said, "Honey, I've been doing this since you were 12". So I said, "OK" and let it drop.
I never even hear dealers use the term "basic strategy". They usually say something like, "Well, sure the 'book' tells you to do that, but it never works". I no longer argue with them.

I don't ever say the words "basic strategy" at the table. I don't want the dealer or the pit to have any hint about my skill level or knowledge of the game. They are going to learn everything they want to know about me just by watching, anyway. I'd rather they think I was just another dumb gambler having a great time.
